A superb week’s fishing at Rutland Water with plenty of fish being caught including both the season’s best rainbow and the best brown to date.
Sheffield angler Mick Herbert boat fished nymphs to net a very solid looking 9lb 7oz rainbow that fell to a size 14 buzzer. The best brown trout of the season fell to Toff Crowther from Oakham. Toff boat fished and managed a 7lb 8oz specimen, he also caught two more overwintered fish, both rainbows and over the 4lb mark.
Overwintered fish are showing with fish varying from torpedo shaped rainbows around the 2lb plus mark to browns of 3lb and up. Mr M Stead from Mexborough in South Yorkshire had a good three day’s boat fishing which included a 5lb brown amongst the fish he recorded.
Nymph anglers are in their element at the moment with really massive hatches of buzzer virtually every day, yet again the sizes are small but with signs that medium to large ones are beginning to come off. Not many fish are moving on top yet with last week’s easterly winds being cold the fish had their heads down.
Lure anglers are also catching well with Daphnia feeding fish. Also on the menu are corixa and the odd Roach/Perch. There are no signs of fish feeding on the shrimp in the reservoir yet, possibly things will happen when the aerators are switched on.
