Join Dave Barham, editor of Boat Fishing Monthly, on his annual smoothhound pilgrimage in this made-for-TV programme from the Sea Watch Monthly crew that’s free to view in April’s issue.

He’s fishing four miles offshore aboard ‘My Way’ – and the reason he comes to this mark every year is because of the stamp of fish in this area – the smoothhounds average 14lb and there’s a real chance of a 20-pounder.

He’s certainly in the right hands too – skipper Gethyn Owen’s has had three national bests on his boat, including the Welsh records for spurdog, starry smoothhounds and the Welsh tope record at over 70lb (and we get to see the picture). There’s also the chance of a big bull huss.

Dave and Gethyn show how to set up for these hard-fighting fish with light tackle, including how to hook peeler crab baits, and they pass on a bundle of handy boat fishing tricks in an enjoyable programme.

The fish are obviously there… but the boys have to keep ringing the changes to get them interested.

A move to a deeper mark with a faster tide run finds the first starry smoothhound comes to the boat, the action culminating in a fine double figure fish – fantastic sport on light spinning tackle and braid.
