Warwickshire have won the prestigious Angling Times County Championships after a close-fought match at Heronbrook Fishery.
The trio of Jon Arthur, Pete Caton and Kev Folwell beat 37 other county teams, winning on the day by just one point from Staffordshire and pocketing the £3,000 winner’s purse.
Jon, Pete and Kev, all regulars at Tunnel Barn Farm Fishery, turned in a 27 point total from that they described as a good draw, despite two of them never having fished the venue before.
The result was effectively decided by a 5lb barbel Pete landed right on the final whistle from peg 18 on the Bridge Pool. But Jon had to work hard, fishing at 18.5m with pellet for much of his 133-6-0 bag of F1s, which was second overall in the individual stakes.
Kevin had the toughest of the team’s three draws and after struggling for four hours for 12lb of F1s, he made a vital switch to fishing shallow with maggot on roach gear, landing 70 roach and a vital 3lb bream. West Midlands finished in 12th spot.
