Drennan Team England’s talented mix of youth and experience put on a skilful display to win this year’s Home International on the Newry Canal, Ireland from 21st to 24th October 2015.
With the Home International being reinstated this year it proved a resounding success for all taking part. England, Wales, Scotland and home nation Ireland all competed this year with teams of seven anglers. The teams combined their international experience with up and coming talented youth anglers.
The venue provided small roach, perch and the occasional bonus hybrid with pole tactics dominating the event.
Day one – saw an average of 5 kg per angler, with James Dent (England) taking the top weight of 11 kg.
A drop in the wind and overnight rain slowed the fishing down on day two, but that didn’t deter Matt Derry (England) who took the lead with 6.88kg. Cameron Hughes (England) also managed two section wins and maximum points.
The overall top individual prize with two section wins and a total weight of 13.56 kg went to Matt Derry, who just pipped his fellow Team England squad member Will Raison who weighed 13.38kg.
Alan Scotthorne, Lee Kerry and Simon Willsmore also caught some good quality nets of fish. It was a fantastic win by Drennan Team England with 19 points who show that they are at the top of their sport.
In second place was Scotland with 35.5 points who fished an incredible match, with the hosts Ireland taking third place with 42 points.
A disappointing event for Wales who managed second place as a team on Day Two, but still fell short of Ireland and Scotland in the overall stakes to finish in fourth place overall. This young team showed how talented they were taking on the more experienced international anglers in the medal stakes.
A big thank you to the host nation Ireland for all their hospitality and for organising such a successful Home International. Next year’s event is to be held in England on a venue to be confirmed.
