Brian Connelly of Oriel Angling reports this week
The fishing on Carlingford Lough is getting into full swing with many anglers enjoying excellent mackerel fishing from the shore at Greenore. Pound for pound they are one of the hardest fighting fish in the sea and should be enjoyed on light tackle. They will strip line of your reel when fly-fishing for them. Oriel Angling guide Glenn Rooney suggests deceiver patterns fished fast with a standard 7 weight fly rod. He also says to remember to wear glasses when fly fishing, make sure no one is behind you and most importantly practice catch and release.

Oliver Finnegan reports that thing are steadily improving at present and he reports good catches of Ling, Wrasse, Whitening and Codling. Oliver also informs me that Tope numbers are also steadily increasing as the water temperature rises.

River Mourne
Michel Winthrop (France) fishing on the upper Mourne last Thursday saw two Salmon Grassed 13.5lbs and 6lbs both on the Fly. Ronnie Hill (Newtownstewart) also banked a fresh 13lb fish also on the Fly. The water level is now low on the river and fishing will be more difficult but the Grilse and Sea Trout are still moving upstream and like similar rivers the Mourne is best fished with small Fly’s early morning and late evenings.
River Finn
Reports this week from Ian Gamble National Angling Guide.
Ian informs me that the fishing over the past number of days was fantastic and that during two fishing trips to the river Finn at Cloghan last Wednesday and Friday he caught and released nineteen Grilse on the fly and retained a further eight for the pot. Ian also informs me that he is catching fish this again this week in fewer numbers and that he is also catching good numbers of Sea trout on small Salmon flies.
Among the many other successful anglers visiting the Finn was Martin McDaid (Strabane) with two fish averaging 3.5lbs on the fly and Tommy Cunning (L’Derry) with four fish averaging 3.5lbs on the

River Faughan
Gerry Campbell National Angling Guide reports that fishing was good last week along the Ardlough road and Campsie stretches of the river and among the successful anglers was Kevin Kelly (L’Derry) with two Grilse on the same fly cast and David Ogilvy (L’Derry) also grassed two Grilse averaging 3lbs along the same stretch of river. Gerry also reports that six Grilse were caught along the Campsie stretch of the river and most were taken on the Fly. Gerry reports that Grilse and Sea Trout numbers are starting to build at the lower part of the river and recommends the use of small Fly’s early morning and late evening.

Cashel Trout Fishery

First of all, I would like to announce that, we, Cashel Lake View (Trout Fishery and Bed and Breakfast) are now official distributors of Foyle and Carlingford Area Licences.
Another outstanding weekend with Dries and Buzzers being the most popular fly pattern in use. Gerard Quinn banked ten trout using Daddies taking four of them home for tea. Breakfast is now being served at Cashel in the comfort of an open log fire with plenty of craic. Group bookings most welcome during the week.
