Sea match round-up

BIGGEST shore match of the week was Shiremouth and District’s Annual open, which took place between Amble Pier and Tynemouth Pier and attracted and excellent turn out of 372, incidentally far more than any coarse fishing match over the weekend.
You needed peeler crab to be up there and that was the bait Whitley Bay’s Chris Stringer used to take 16 codling and coalfish for a match winning 22-12-8. He fished at Lynemouth Bay, and his weight was easily enough to take the spoils, with Seaham’s Dean Monarch taking second on 16-11-0 and Easington’s Paul Westmoreland third on 14-14-8. Chris’s weight was the best in any match around the country over the weekend.
Two more matches attracted over 200 anglers on a busy weekend, although cod were few and far between.
In the Tenby and District Open fished at Tenby, Saundersfoot and Amroth, there were 248 anglers going head to head, yet it needed only a 790gr dogfish to take the top prize. The fish was taken by Welsh international Mark Cowell, who is from Llantwit Major. Second was Emlyn Thomas, Ludchurch with a 670gr flounder and third C Hicks, Milford with a dogfish of 665 gr.
The Aldeburgh Blind Open fished from Town Beach to Thoropeness drew in 217 rods to the Suffolk venue.
Junior angler Ben Morgan, who comes from Saxmundham, took the top spot thanks to a nice 6lb 12oz bass. The fish came from peg 86 and meant the youngster went home with £700 in his pocket.
Second was Trevor Williams from Clacton. He drew the end peg at Thorpeness and landed bassm whiting, dab and pouting with enough sizeable for him to weigh in 3-1-0.
