Labour’s Parliamentary spokesman for Angling, Reading West MP Martin Salter, was unanimously re-elected chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Angling Group at their AGM on Tuesday 24th March. Mr Salter, who is retiring from Parliament at the next general election, has pledged to carry on working for angling and the waterside environment.

The meeting went on to discuss the threat to migratory fish stocks in the Wye, Severn and Usk catchments posed by the Severn Barrage. The Group have agreed to ask the Angling Trust and the Wye and Usk Foundation to give a presentation in the House of Commons in the near future on the impact of the Barrage on fish stocks and fisheries.

Mr Salter said:-

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity not just to carry on as Labour’s spokesman for angling but to be able to work across the party political divide to support Britain’s most popular participation sport. Issues like the Water Framework Directive, the Marine Bill, and the Severn Barrage will require the friends of angling in Parliament to make their voices heard loud and clear. This is a job I relish.”
