Drennan Team England have once again showed their class on the world match angling stage by taking gold in the 2010 World Coarse Fishing Championships in Spain, with Italy taking the silver, Holland the bronze and Ireland just missing out on a medal in fourth.
Scotland, who were second after day one, dropped back a bit on day two but still equalled their best ever result with a fifth.
To complete probably the best ever world fishing championships for the home nations, Wales finished in sixth.
In blazing conditions and with big, wild carp to double figures showing, England were able to hold on to the lead they built up on day one despite a very strong effort on the second day by the Italians which saw them total just 16 points.
England’s day one scorecard read: Alan Scotthorne 3 points; Des Shipp 3; Sean Ashby 4; Steve Gardener 4; Will Raison 7.
In line with team rules, Will Raison made way for the reserve Stu Conroy on day two, and England’s strength in depth was illustrated with Stu leading the way with a section win in A section.
On the individual front, the gold went to Luxemberg tackle dealer Frank Meis, the only angler to score two section wins, who explains how he fished it in a video interview below.
There was joy for Ireland though with Cathal Hughes taking the silver after a section second and first and the biggest overall weight of the competition of 24.68 kilos.
Other notable individual performances came from Jamie Masson (Scotland) in fifth, Alan Scotthorne of England in sixth, Ian Hughes of Wales in seventh, Steve Gardener of England in ninth and Brian Clark of Scotland in tenth.
Dave Harrell of Match Fishing magazine was on the bank to witness the performance, and commented in his blog: “It has been a privilege to watch the well-oiled team in action today, not just on the bank but also from behind where the management team of Mark Addy and Mark Downes were backed up with some tremendous hard work by the likes of Will Raison, Simon Willsmore, Callum Dicks, John Raison, Lee Kerry and several others. Make no mistake, this was a true team job and every single person played a massive part!”
