A North Sea trawler skipper and his crew had a shock when they fished up what appears to be part of a human skull.

The boat’s skipper immediately made radio contact with police and the skull was handed over when the trawler docked at Eyemouth on Sunday. The find was made as the vessel, ‘Bonaventure’ fished 100 miles east of North Shields.

A Lothian and Borders police spokesman confirmed that a pathologist would examine the remains to establish whether they are human, but the suspician was that they are.

“The area where it was found is a busy shipping lane with ferries travelling from Denmark to North Shields. Inquiries are continuing,” he said.
