Half a million UK recreational sea anglers will hear next week if the EU will ration how many fish they can take home for the family supper.
A delegation from the Angling Trust will meet Dr. Joe Borg, the EU fisheries commissioner, in Brussels at 10 a.m. on Tuesday April 28, to persuade him it would be unfair to subject sea anglers to tough new European regulations designed to protect fish stocks from continued commercial overfishing.
It will be led by Stuart McPherson, the Trust’s Director for sea angling.
Dr. Borg has already agreed to exempt the half million sea anglers who fish from the shore. That leaves another half a million anglers who fish from boats and who are the financial backbone of the £1 billion industry threatened by the new controls.
The Angling Trust anticipates issuing a statement after the meeting.
