Daiwa Dorking took centre stage at the Angling Trust Division One National Championship on Saturday 6th August 2011 on the New Junction Canal, Doncaster to not only win as team Champions with 551 points and weight of 25.520kg, but for top England International angler, Steve Gardener to win the gold medal in the individual category from peg A59 with 4.380kg.
The Daiwa Dorking team fishing on the day were; Steve Sanders (Team Captain), Lee Edwards, Will Raison, Des Shipp, Callum Dicks, Michael Buchwalder, Darren Davies, Dave Harpin, Simon Willsmore and Steve Gardener.
As well as Daiwa Dorking taking both the team and individual Championship titles for 2011, Dave Harpin and Will Raison both went on to win their sections.
Steve Sanders, Daiwa Dorking Team Captain said “Daiwa Dorking’s approach to the match was similar to many other teams, but we decided the distance we fished at was more important than the depth. This was because of the amount of people on the bank, pushing the fish out, so when we had cover or an end peg, it was agreed to fish 13 metres, whatever the depth. We balled in 6 – 8 balls of Sensas Lake and Noire and cupped 2 balls with squatts over the top. We put chopped worm in the edge and fished the long line until it died, when we would top up with a ball, fish it out, then top up again. Our tactics proved to be perfect for the draw we had and I have never been prouder of my team mates after a match. The performances and effort were truly magnificent and a brilliant performance from Steve Gardener in winning the Individual show what a truly great angler he is”.
In silver medal position were Barnsley & District AAS with 492 points and 17.300kg and Maver North West in third position with 489 points and weight of 16.410kg. In the Individual category in runner up position was James Cameron of Clay Lane Tubertini from peg H50 who topped the scales with 4.150kg. Just behind James in bronze medal position was Barry Oliver of Maver Image VDE with a weight of 4.070kg from peg J37.
The top ten teams from the Angling Trust Division One National Championship are invited to take part in the Preston Innovations ‘World Club Classic’ qualifying weekend on the 24th/25th September 2011 on the Newark Dyke in Nottinghamshire.
