A three way tie between Preston Innovations Telford, Daiwa Dorking, and Drennan Barnsley Blacks meant drama greeted the teams at the qualifier for the first ever World Feeder Club Championships.
Only the top two teams would qualify to represent England and the Angling Trust in the inaugural FIPSed World Feeder Club Championships in Valencia, Spain on 1st/2nd April 2017. After a tight battle fished at Barston lakes, Solihull between the 7 teams, the results showed a three way tied on 17 points.
With a nail biting wait to see who qualified on weight count back it was Preston Innovations Telford who took first place honours with a fantastic weight of 128lb 9oz. Drennan Barnsley Blacks were the next team to come out on top with 83lb 140z just pipping Daiwa Dorking to third place with 80lb 12oz. Species on the day consisted mainly of carp, F1’s and skimmers.
Preston Innovations Telford team consisted of; Tommy Pickering, Adam Wakelin, Mick Vials, Will Freeman and Neil McKinnon, and managed by Emma Pickering.
A delighted Emma Pickering announced “The team had a great 4 hours and I felt we were in the lead even though it was very close between 3 teams. We dropped back in the last hour, as the plan was to come in on a closer line but the fish moved out. The lads were brilliant and we had Tommy winning the match but more importantly a section win and also Adam winning his section too. The top 3 teams all finished on 17 points, which was incredible and shows the strength of UK feeder fishing at the moment”.
Both teams are delighted to be heading to Spain next April for the first ever feeder club championships and they will doing their utmost to bring home more silverware. The power of the two squads is immense and contains a number of the England International Feeder squad, including manager Tommy Pickering (Preston InnovationsTelford) and Assistant Manager Glenn Lawrence (Drennan Barnsley Coach).
The Drennan Barnsley Blacks team consisted of Alan Scotthorne, Lee Kerry, James Dent, Eddie Bridon, Andy Power and Coach Glenn Lawrence.
Glenn Lawrence said “We fished 3 lines of attack 50 m maggot feeder 30 m tiny joker feeder and 18 m leam and fishmeal feeder to start on the 50 m line to pick an early F1 or bream then switched between the other 2 lines all match, and feeding very little bait all the match worked well for 4 out of 5 of us to score 17 points. James Dent 1, Lee Kerry 3, Alan Scotthorne 3, Andy Powers 3 and Eddie Bridon 7.”
