There is no stopping Drennan Barnsley Blacks at the moment as they added to an already bulging trophy cabinet with a third victory in as many years at the Angling Trust Team Commercial National.
The squad – who also claimed a trio of Winter League final victories in February – made short work of this 23-team, 230 angler contest at the prolific Lindholme Lakes complex near Doncaster.
Barnsley’s score sheet saw them card two section wins and a host of solid back up scores for a 27-point total. That put them ahead of a great performance from runners up Clowne Angling Supplies on 41 and third placed Daiwa Tackle & Bates with 49.
The top three teams were followed by a tightly bunched frame where just 10 points separated the next 11 sides.
And while the stars came out for this 2023 National curtain-raiser, so did the sun and the anglers faced summer-like temperatures reaching 20 degrees and flat calm waters.
This didn’t make for ideal bagging conditions following a week of rain, but the ever-consistent venue still produced the goods and over 20 kilos was needed to win each section across Benny’s, Strip, Loco, Willows, Laurels, Bonsai, and Beeches.
Barnsley’s Jordan Holloway and captain Lee Kerry claimed the side’s two wins, backed up with four seconds, three fourth places, and a fifth.
“It’s an amazing event and we’re so delighted to win it three times on the bounce,” said Lee. “We’ve put loads of effort in over the past few weeks and that’s the key to getting great results.
“Fair play to Clowne Angling and Tackle & Bates for their scores too.”
The individual honours fell to Team Browning angler Tom Scholey who needed five weighs for his 114k 450g total from peg 35 on Loco lake where he fished caster shallow down the edge and short to plunder F1s steadily from the first whistle.
Loco’s peg 2 was the scene of Jordan Holloway’s 97k 070g runners up catch while Bonsai 14 was where Browning Youth’s Tommy Clark claimed the bronze medal from with his 83k 325g net.
The Angling Trust would like to thank Aaron, Neil and the Lindholme Lakes staff for their continued support for the Team Commercial National – including donating £2,500 to the prize money. Thanks to all the stewards and anglers who made sure the day ran smoothly.
