Dick Clegg, OBE, International Events Manager of the Angling Trust is happy to announce the Veterans team which will represent the Angling Trust and England in this year’s World Angling Games in Italy.
Dick has this year decided to coach the Veterans team himself on the same venue that brought England their first ever Nations World Championship win back in 1985. The river Arno in Florence was where Kevin Ashurst, Tommy Pickering , Ian Heaps , Dennis White and Bob Nudd secured England’s first ever Gold medal and gave Dave Roper his own individual Gold.
Because of England’s success in Belgium last year, Dick has not seen any need to change the team that finished second, and he has high hopes of once more beating the Italians on their home soil.
The England Veterans World Championship team for 2011 will consist of; Terry Lancaster, Don Slaymaker, Stan Binge, Roger Marlow and Dicky Carr, with Brian Gibson as Assistant Coach.
The stretch of river to be used is in sight of the world famous Ponte Vecchio and is the exact section which Bob Nudd fished some 26 years ago. The river has changed since then and the chub that dominated the area have almost disappeared. This year’s team will be fishing for other species which will include bleak, small catfish, carrasio and the odd bigger carp.
Dick Clegg, OBE, International Events Manager said “Unfortunately as with some of the other teams representing the Angling Trust the Veterans team are paying their own expenses, so please support any fundraising aimed at reducing these costs”.
