A massive 42lb 7oz cod has been landed off the north east coast, less than a mile from the shore.

Retired miner Bernard McKever was fishing off Newbiggin aboard the private boat Hilders Pride and Joy.

The fish, one of the biggest cod ever taken off the north east coastline on rod and line, took a jigger with a blue plastic squid off Church Point.
