The 32 anglers who had collected the most win and section points throughout the past year in matches at Moorlands Farm Fishery competed in the 15th Ultimate League final fished on Saturday and Sunday the 16th/17th June.
A combined weight over three matches would decide the winner, one match Saturday and two on Sunday.
Saturday’s five-hour match was fished on Meadow, Bank & Moors Pools. Maver Midlands Dynamite Baits backed Wayne Mellings took top spot, drawing peg 20 on Bank and catching carp up to double figures, first at 13 metres up in the water on pellet and later at six metres on the bottom with paste.
Sunday’s morning match saw Wayne in charge again, this time from Peg 54 on Meadow, where he used the same tactics as Saturday and caught mainly carp along with the odd silver fish to finish with 114 lb.
Sunday afternoon saw some big weights for just a four-hour match. In first place was Richard Kings (St Davids) who weighed in 156lb 6oz from peg 14 Moors – big carp up to 15lb fishing down the inside towards the next pallet on meat.
Stourbridge anglers Iwan Mills produced a consistent performance over the two days for second spot overall, fishing mainly down the edge with pellet.
But in the end it was Wayne Mellings who took the first prize of £600 with a combined three-day weight of 308-7-0.
