South African angler Tristan Schrieber – age 16 – caught this 35.8 kg (78 lb 14 oz) narrowbarred mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) on May 5th which looks set to become the new Male Junior world record.
Schrieber was fishing out of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa when the massive mackerel hit the live maasbanker (goggle eye/jack mackerel) he was slow-trolling behind the Wattu, captained by PJ Botha.
Schrieber needed 20 minutes to beat the fish to gaff on the 10 kg (20 lb) gear he was using. The current IGFA world record is 31.8 kg (70 lb 1 oz).
