Plans are afoot to create a super fishery at South Yorkshire’s Worsbrough Reservoir after a local angler revealed proposals to stock it with 10,000 carp.
Barnsley Bait Company boss Glenn Greasley is working with Barnsley And District Amalgamated Angling Society to raise the £30,000 needed in a hope to restore the venue to its former glory and ‘make is a training ground for champions’ once again. Some of the country’s top match anglers like Denis White and Alan Scotthorne cut their teeth at Worsbrough.
Glenn has already raised £8,000 through charity events and matches but needs another £2,000 for the angling society to match it. A further £10,000 will then be sought from the National Lottery.
Glenn said: “It’s such a big water an needs a lot of fish. When it’s been restocked before it’s not been enough. The idea is when we stock it, if it takes off and its used, we can re invest the funds that come in.”
In its heyday it was hard to find a spare peg on the reservoir it but now there is little to attract most anglers who now go out of the borough to the big commercials fisheries.
“If we had our own super fishery at Worsbrough it would bring business into Barnsley,” he said. The angling society has already spent £50,000 at the 75-peg water to improve amenities, platforms and walkways,
