Rugby angler Brian Clayton has hit the angling headlines by catching a rare mandarin catfish from Spain’s River Ebro.
The mighty 123lb Wels catfish isn’t just noted for its colossal size – around six feet in length – but mainly because of its bright yellow colour. Catfish usually have a mottled appearance to camouflage them in their early years and brightly coloured catfish rarely survive because they are so easily picked off when small by predators. Brian’s big fish took a popped-up 20mm pellet fished on the Riba Roja stretch, where incidentally I took my only 100lb-plus catfish.
