The Angling Trust Individual National followed its historic path with Division 1 to the mighty River Trent and it was certainly well supported, with a record turnout for the day of 207 anglers.
With competitors split between Clifton and East Stoke, there were a multitude of techniques that could have won the match and it was difficult to call where the winner was to come from. One area which had shown some recent form was Radcliffe Viaduct, where some good bream weights had been caught. However, with the water temperature dropping a few degrees, some hesitantly predicted that the barbel would have a munch, this was to be the case, but it was the aforementioned bream that made the winning weight.
The Hamms Bridge section threw up the big matches winner in Andrew Moss from Browning Hotrods. Andrew drew peg 131 at the lower end where he fished worm & caster in conjunction with a ground bait feeder. This saw him take a succession of skimmers and bream to 6lb and record a fine win with 19.050Kg, giving him the title of Individual National Champion 2018.
Ian Leach (Weston Tricast Wales) had barbel to thank for his runner up spot. Fishing hemp & caster through a feeder on peg 179 at East Stoke, Ian caught 15 barbel up to 6lb to finish with 17.680Kg.
Rounding out the top three was Daiwa Gordon League captain, Mark Treasure. Mark fished a tidy match, catching 13.650Kg of skimmers & bream to 5lb on the feeder from peg 69 at Radcliffe.
Overall the river fished well considering the amount of practice that has been occurring in this run up week. With a week of rest we’re hopeful for a very competitive Division 1 National next weekend.
The Angling Trust would like to thank Nottingham Federation, Nottingham AA & Newark & District for use of their waters.
