The first round on the Nuneaton Teams of Twelve league on the Coventry Canal in the city centre once again showed the venue’s potential.
A sharp overnight frost coupled with bright overhead conditions did hit the fishing, but the winner Jason Cunningham had over 18lb of roach from the first peg to the left of the Stony Stratford roadbridge on the Leicester Causeway and the 12 anglers in section A adjacent to Foleshill Road near the Prince William pub weighed in 110lb.
It’s all joker fishing at the moment and you need it even when pleasure fishing, but a pint of bait costing £6 is more than enough. Feed the joker neat and fish a single joker on a size 24 or 26 hook, 0.06mm hooklength and a 0.3gr or 0.2gr float to a No2 elastic. If you are looking to pleasure fish, go to the left of the Foleshill Road bridge.
Liam Lynott, who controls the stretch and finished second in the match with 16-4-0 of roach from 2oz to 12oz, said: “On its day there isn’t a canal in the country to match it. You have to fish joker at the moment but come the spring you can catch on squatt and caster and if you can get them going on hemp you will see some absolutely superb quality big roach that you can’t catch on anything else.”
Liam takes club bookings and is looking to run a summer league on the venue. For more information call him on 07974 071037.
