Local team Scunthorpe Blue took the glory this weekend at New Junction Canal, Doncaster, in the team classifications in the Division 3 National Championship and took home the gold medal with 198 points, and total weight of 19.740kg.
Scunthorpe Blue team fishing on the day were; Phil Iveson, Ronny Benn, Dave Bell, Geoff Walker, Dave Mountford, Paul Moutry, Alan Gregory, Danny Taylor, Roy Wells and Graham Frith. Team Captain of Scunthorpe Blue stated, “We are elated at winning today. We have fished together for a long time and have a lot of experience, fishing for Scunthorpe Tackle Centre. We decided the tactic today was to go for a squat approach to the match and to fish for small fish, but to look for bigger fish when needed to.”
Runner up team, Dick Clegg, Barnsley took the silver medal with 176 points, and weight of 15.500kg, and in third place Tackle2Fish.co.uk won the bronze medal in the team classification with 170 points, and 21.720kg. In the build up to the event all the practice matches had fished well being double pegged, but on the day of the National Championship glorious sunshine, high temperatures, and having pegs next to each other played some part in problems for the anglers catching in some sections.
What a day for surprises as everyone were guessing sections G and K were going to fish well, but the Individual National Champion for 2009 was presented to Darren Hall of Tackle2Fish.co.uk with a fantastic winning weight of 5.800kg from peg B17 (Barnby Dun). In runner up position to take home the silver medal was Pete Bailey of Worcester National Team on peg A4 (Kirk Sandall) with a weight of 5.530kg, and in third place was another Tackle2Fish.co.uk angler, Philip Turner on peg G23 with 4.320kg. As well as their placings in the individual classification Darren, Pete and Philip all went on to win their sections.
